wendy chin-tanner
He speaks to me
as if to a stranger,
thanking me for coming.
The monks are chanting
and I nod
repetitively,
unhearing
like the drinking bird perched
on the edge of his glass,
not a real bird,
just a pair of bulbs
joined by a reed-thin tube
bobbing rhythmically
that cartoon head,
that motion nothing
but a function
of the pressure within.
