stacy grimes
The things they do, out there, in the night
They torture a mouse in the garden.
How long will it last? It could go on for hours
Out there in the puddling night
The rain beats on the gutter
And keeps the garden from thriving—
And when all the plants have suffocated,
Put new ones in their places
Too late, too late, to reap the fruit,
The cat purrs in the furrow.
The mouse is hiding under his body
They rest out there in the night.
