jessie carty
As I pick at the change
from my cupholder,
I flip over one quarter
that seems slim.
1970. Older than me.
There is a divot
over the 9 and the 7.
I stroke
at Washington's
braid and wonder
if maybe a young groom
had rubbed
this quarter while he
waited for his bride.
I can see the church, small,
but not without
the same sound of those colossal
cathedrals like the Sacre
Coeur where the stairs to the tower
have gone concave
down the center of each step.
When I was there
I tried to walk as close to the wall
as possible, as if
my little feet in my one visit
could somehow
work away a noticeable
bit of stone.
